Bosch washing machine error codes

Bosch washers show two styles of code depending on where the machine was sold. North American models display E-codes, often with a sub-code like E:30 -10. European and UK models show the same faults as F-codes. E18 and F18 are the same fault on two continents.

Stop the machine if you see these

F23 means water or electrical trouble rather than a blockage. Turn the tap off, unplug the machine and read the page before running another cycle.

Things that look like faults but are not

These stop people mid-wash and send them looking for a repair. None of them needs one.

The child lock is on, which is why the buttons do nothing. It is switched off by holding the same button you used to switch it on, usually for several seconds, and which button that is depends on the model. It survives a power cut on most machines, so it is often still on after an outage.
A drum with a water droplet
A reminder to run the drum cleaning cycle, not a fault. Skipping it for long enough leads to the smell people blame on the machine being broken.
A foam symbol
Too much detergent, same condition as E33. Halve your dose and it will not come back.
A flashing pause or play icon
Energy saving mode. The display dimmed itself after sitting idle. Press the icon and it wakes up.
