Step 1. Use less detergent, and halve what you think is right
Most people use two to three times what a high-efficiency machine needs. The dose printed on the box assumes a heavily soiled full load in hard water. Everyday washing needs about half, and light loads less again. This single change fixes the fault permanently in most households.
Step 2. Check you are using HE detergent
This is the big one on Whirlpool machines. A high-efficiency washer uses a fraction of the water a traditional one did, and ordinary detergent foams uncontrollably in it. Look for the HE symbol on the box. Using non-HE detergent produces this code on essentially every wash.
Step 3. Let the suds routine finish
The machine is already handling it. Opening the door, cancelling and restarting interrupts the routine and starts the whole process again, which is why the cycle sometimes seems to run forever.
Step 4. Run a clean cycle with no detergent
If the code appears even on correct doses, there is old detergent built up in the dispenser, hoses and drum. Run the machine empty on the hottest cycle with a washer cleaner, then wipe the dispenser and the door seal.
When to call a technician
Almost never. If foam appears with no detergent at all, in a machine you have already cleaned out, then the pressure sensor may be misreading and that is worth a call. Everything else here is dosing.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- The cycle has been running for three hours. Is it stuck?
- Probably not. Suds reduction adds rinse after rinse until the foam clears, and on a badly overdosed load that genuinely takes hours. Let it finish once, then halve the dose from the next wash.
- Can suds damage the machine?
- Not directly, but heavy foam stops the pump moving water properly, which can bring on a drain fault as well. If you are seeing both codes, fix the dosing first and the drain fault often disappears with it.
