Step 1. Open the door and spread the load out
One heavy item on its own is the classic cause: a bath mat, a single pair of jeans, a bedsheet that has wrapped itself into a rope. Untangle it, spread it around the drum and restart the spin.
Step 2. Add a couple of towels to a bulky load
A drum holding only one large item has nothing to balance against. Two or three towels alongside a duvet or a coat give the machine something to work with, and it is faster than fighting the same load three times.
Step 3. Check the machine does not rock
Push down on each top corner in turn. Any movement means a foot is short, and a machine that rocks is unbalanced before any laundry goes in it. Level it with the feet and tighten the locknuts so it stays that way.
Step 4. On a recently installed machine, look for shipping bolts
Transit bolts hold the drum rigid through the back panel and every one has to come out before first use. Left in they cause violent vibration and this code from the very first wash. Delivery crews do not always remove them.

Suspension or bearings
If a level machine with a sensible mixed load still refuses to spin, the dampers or the drum bearings are worn. Price this against a new machine before agreeing to it: bearings in particular are among the few washer repairs that genuinely stop being worth doing.
When to call a technician
Only when a level machine with an ordinary load cannot spin. Loud knocking during the spin, or a drum that moves a lot when rocked by hand with the machine unplugged, points at suspension or bearings.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

- The code came up at the end and the clothes are soaking.
- That is the ordinary case: the machine washed and rinsed properly but could not spin the water out. Redistribute what is in the drum, close the door and run a spin only cycle. Nothing needs fixing.
- It happens with every load now.
- Check the machine is level before anything else. Floors settle, feet work loose, and a washer that has been pulled out for cleaning and pushed back often ends up rocking on one corner.
