What to check yourself
Step 1. Check the drain hose behind the machine
LG puts this first and so do we, because it costs nothing. Pull the machine out far enough to see the whole run of hose and look for a kink, a crushed section against the wall, or a stretch that dips below the machine and holds water.
Step 2. Run a spin and listen to the pump
This is the check that separates a free fix from a paid one, and hardly anyone does it. Start a spin only cycle and put an ear near the bottom front of the machine. A steady hum means the pump motor is alive and the blockage is ahead of it, almost always in the filter. Silence means the pump, its wiring or the board, and that is a different conversation.
Step 3. Empty the machine through the small drain tube
Open the panel at the bottom front. Beside the large filter cap there is a thin tube with a plug in the end. Put a shallow tray under it and pull the plug. One point LG makes that saves a lot of confusion: do not pull the tube far out of the machine, because it kinks and stops draining. If the flow stops, push it back in about an inch and it starts again.
Water from an interrupted hot wash can scald. Let the machine stand an hour first.
Step 4. Clean the pump filter
With the water out, unscrew the large cap and pull the filter. Brush it clean with something soft, clear out the housing behind it, and check the impeller turns freely. Coins, hair grips, buttons and underwire are the regulars. Refit the cap firmly: left half a turn loose, it drips.
Step 5. Test the standpipe
Take the hose out of the standpipe and pour a jug of water down it. If it backs up, the fault is in the house plumbing rather than the washer. On a pedestal installation, check the drain height as well: LG specifies no higher than 53 inches, and above that the pump cannot lift the water.

Replace the drain pump
If the hose is clear, the filter is clean and the standpipe drains, the pump has failed. It sits at the base of the machine and the job means working on a live circuit with the appliance tipped.
When to call a technician
Once the hose, the filter and the standpipe are ruled out, or immediately if the pump is silent when it should run. Call sooner if the machine trips the breaker during the drain, or if there is a burning smell from underneath.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- Does OE mean the same thing on a Samsung?
- No, and it is worth being certain before you buy anything. OE on an LG means water is not draining. OE on a Samsung means the tub has too much water in it, which is close to the opposite problem and a different part.
- The pump hums but nothing moves.
- Then the motor is running and something is stopping the water. Nine times out of ten that is the filter, and you have just saved yourself a call-out. Clean it, check the impeller turns by hand, and try again.
