What to check yourself
Step 1. Unplug for ten seconds, then try one cycle
LG asks for this first. An overload that has passed clears here, and a genuine electrical fault comes straight back. One attempt is informative; five are not.
Step 2. Take half the laundry out
An overloaded drum makes the motor pull harder than the design allows, and a soaked duvet or a rug is heavy enough on its own. Halve the load, spread it evenly, and run a short cycle.
Step 3. Turn the drum by hand and listen
With the machine unplugged, spin the drum. Free movement with a light rumble is normal; grinding or stiffness means something is jamming it, and the motor is straining against that rather than failing on its own.
Unplug at the wall first. A drum that starts under power with a hand inside it causes serious injury.
Step 4. Check what the machine is plugged into
Worth ruling out before paying for anything. An extension cord or a shared circuit makes the supply sag exactly when the motor demands most, and the board can read that as an over current condition. Plug directly into a wall outlet on its own circuit.

Motor, rotor position sensor or main board
If the drum turns freely on a sensible load and a good outlet, the fault is inside: a shorted motor winding, a failed position sensor, or the board itself. Telling them apart needs meter readings with the back off.
When to call a technician
Immediately if there is any burning smell, if the machine trips the breaker, or if it has scorch marks anywhere. Otherwise after a reset, a reduced load and a direct wall outlet have all been tried.

A new machine of the same class runs $500 to $1,500. Once a quote passes about a third of that on an older appliance, the repair stops making sense.

Questions people ask
- How is this different from LE?
- They are two views of the same trouble. LE says the motor is locked and cannot turn; CE says the current is too high, which is what a motor straining against a load or a fault actually does. Both start with the same checks: reduce the load and make sure the drum turns freely.
- It only happens on the spin.
- That fits: the spin is when the motor pulls hardest. Suspect the load first, then the supply, then the motor. A machine that washes normally and fails only at high speed is rarely a dead motor.
