Check these, in this order
The order matters. It runs from the cause that is most common and costs nothing to the one that is rare and costs money.
Step 1. Redistribute the load and run a spin on its own
One heavy item wrapped into a ball on one side of the drum is the most common answer by a wide margin. The machine detects the imbalance, drops the speed and then stops rather than shake itself across the floor. Open the door, shake things out, spread them evenly and select a spin only cycle.
Step 2. Check whether it drained
A machine cannot spin with water in the drum, and many will not tell you which of the two problems you have. If there is water sitting in the tub, this is a drain fault rather than a spin fault, and the drain guide is the right place to go next.
Step 3. Mix item sizes in the load
Four bath towels and nothing else cannot balance themselves. If this happens on towel and bedding loads but never on mixed ones, you are not looking at a fault, you are looking at how the drum is being filled.
Step 4. Check the machine sits level and solid
Push down on each corner in turn. If it rocks, the machine reads its own movement as an unbalanced load and cuts the spin. Adjust the feet until it sits firm and tighten their locknuts up against the body.
Step 5. On a top loader, check the lid switch
A top loader will not spin with the lid open, which is a safety interlock rather than a fault. When the switch fails it reports the lid as open permanently. Listen for the click as you close it, and look at the small plunger the lid presses on.
Step 6. On a front loader, check the door catch
Same logic, different part. A door that does not latch fully, or a latch that does not report itself as closed, stops the cycle before the spin. Check nothing is trapped in the seal holding the door a fraction open.
What a technician will look at next
Drive belt
On belt-driven machines a worn or slipped belt lets the motor run while the drum barely turns. The tell is a motor you can clearly hear working with a drum that stays still or turns lazily by hand with no resistance.
Motor, coupling or clutch
If the belt is fine, the fault is in the drive: the motor itself, the coupling between motor and drum, or the clutch on machines that have one. These are told apart with meter readings and by getting inside the cabinet.
When to stop and call someone
Once the load, the drainage, the levelling and the lid or door catch are all ruled out. Call straight away instead if there is a burning smell, a loud grinding, or if the drum knocks hard against the casing while it tries to spin, which points at worn bearings.

If a code is showing too
Questions people ask
- It spins on some cycles but not others.
- That is normal behaviour rather than a fault. Delicate and wool programmes use much lower spin speeds on purpose, and bulky items on a fast spin trip the balance detection. Compare the same load on a cotton programme before worrying.
- The drum turns freely by hand but will not spin under power.
- That pattern fits a belt or a drive fault rather than a blockage. A drum that will not turn by hand is the opposite case and points at something jammed.
- Is it worth repairing?
- A lid switch, a door latch or a belt is worth doing on almost any machine: those land between one hundred twenty five and two hundred fifty dollars against five hundred and up for a replacement. A clutch or motor on a machine over eight years old is where the arithmetic turns.
